The Coolidge Collection of Thomas Jefferson manuscripts, 1705-1826.

Collection consists of approximately 9,500 items consisting of almost 8,000 pieces of correspondence (letters to Jefferson and retained copies of outgoing letters often made with a polygraph machine), journals, account books, and other personal paper of Thomas Jefferson, 1705-1826. Includes legal documents related to Jefferson's work as a lawyer with George Wythe, 1767-72; and correspondence with Maria Cosway, 1780s, daughters Martha (later Randolph) and Maria (later Eppes) Jefferson at Monticello, 1790s, Tadeusz Kosciuszko, 1796-97, Abigail and John Adams, James Madison, and James Monroe, ca. 1790s-1826. Papers related to Jefferson's home, Monticello, in Virginia, include account books, 1783-90, "Farm Book," 1774-1824, "Garden Book," 1776-1824, indentures, tax statements and promissory notes. Also, papers related to Poplar Forest and Shadwell in Virginia. Papers kept during Jefferson's presidency (1801-1809) include lists of people entertained at Monticello, lists of votes to repeal the Embargo Act, 1809, and letters addressed to the Tammany Society and various Republican parties. The collection also includes family papers, 1705-57, including the papers of Jefferson's father Peter Jefferson; Jefferson's manuscript of his Notes on the State of Virginia, 1782-83, his only major published work; manuscript copy of Jefferson's translation of Les Ruins, ou Mediation sur les Revolutions des Empires, 1801; Jefferson's manuscript draft of the Declaration of Independence; two manuscript book catalogs, 1775-1812; annotated almanacs, 1771-76; and various other writings. Also, architectural sketches, notes and drawings by Jefferson of Monticello, his apartment in Paris, the University of Virginia, and other sites.
